The return of Nate Dunbar & where’s my partnership?

When I first created Nate Dunbar: Fart Cancer Lawyer, I had two ideas. One is that this would be a one time deal, and you’d never see the character again. The other being that the character would come back as a lawyer for various other ludicrous causes, OR as an advocate for some other crazy occupation.

People responded well to FCL (Yes, I realize cancer is no laughing matter, but I think walked the line on this one to steer clear of offending anyone, and besides, I’ve lost a family member to cancer, so I get it.)

So I’ve decided to bring Nate Dunbar back, sort of. The reality will be that Nate Dunbar is a character played by another character. I wrote part of the sketch today, and combined it with two other ideas I’ve had for a while. I’m hoping to shoot it tomorrow, edit it on Sunday, and post it Monday. Just like old times!!!!

Now, the reason I’ve been posting on a more sparse schedule. Bottom line, I set out in March 2009 to become a YouTube Partner. I figured if I could build a decent audience in six months, I’d have a shot. I tried before with the web series Pounders Fight Squad, but had no idea how get my vids to the masses. Armed with that knowledge now, I figured The UnFamous Chris Show would pull it off… (Click Read More below!)

Flash forward to the end of September, I apply for partnership with 3,000 subs, and an average of 3,000 views per vid. Pretty good I figured. Two weeks go by with no response on the partnership application, and I start to worry. Last time I applied, with 1,300 subs, I was rejected in 3 days. I figured this was a quick process, no? After doing some googling, I found some people were waiting 2 to 3 months for a response, and a few had over 2,000 MORE subs than I do.

So what’s the friggin’ hold up? My best educated guess is that YouTube is done handing out partnerships so freely. They have a core group of “Big” Partners they’ve built over the last two years and it’s more cost effective to promote the shit out of them and bring in as much revenue as they can. This showcases the power of the YouTube brand, and the ability to create viable media commodities via web video.

I applaud them. It’s a great business strategy. One problem. These “big partners” all have egos and bank accounts. Both will get bigger and both will have a desire to get bigger. These “big” partners will probably start to move on at some point & try to break into TV & Film. Fred is just the first of what could be a mass exodus over the next year or two.

So why not start building new stars now? Yes, I’m saying this for personal reasons, but it’s something that should happen. Create a rising star category on YouTube. Use the completely useless rating system to decide who stays and goes within the category. If someone’s audience size increases dramatically enough, spotlight one of their vids, promote them on the main page, and you’ve got yourself a new “big partner”/star.

The problem is YouTube got too big for it’s britches when it came to creating stars & now they’ve got a bunch of high school kids heading off to college who don’t have the time to make youtube vids anymore. They want to finish their education and make real movies & real television. They want agents, and big money, all without having to shoot, edit, or produce their own stuff. YouTube gave them the audience and the ego to become actors/actresses, and that’s what they’re setting off to do.

You’ll probably say, well won’t that happen if you become a “big partner”. Nope! I have no desire to move to Cali or NYC. I’m perfectly happy in NJ. The only reason, I want to become a partner & start making some scratch from my vids, is because I want to put more money back into my vids to make them bigger & better. I want to buy a big expensive HD camera. I want to pay my buddies when they help me with my vids. I want to buy crazy costumes & wigs & props.

But all those big city dreams are on hold until my partnership is accepted, or until I start making more money at my day job, which is an awesome job by the way.

So that’s my rant. I didn’t wanna say all this in video form because it’s a long drawn out opinion, better saved for the written word. Thanks for reading!!!

Stay UnFamous.
